What is the role of a Dental hygienist?

Along with the dentist, our hygienist will provide oral hygiene advice including dietary advice and oral care at home which will help maintain your oral health.

Hygienists are specifically trained in maintaining and improving the health of your gums. Most people need to see the hygienist two or three times a year to ensure that the gums remain as healthy and strong as possible. Sometimes, for more advance cases of gum disease, careful treatment planning is necessary and this may involve a course of several longer visits. At these visits, our hygienist will gently and thoroughly clean the diseased areas of the mouth that cannot be reached easily.

Why is this treatment so important?

The majority of people will suffer from gum disease at some point in their life but they are frequently unaware of it. In some cases, it can be very destructive and may lead to early tooth loss if it is left undiagnosed and untreated. We take this very seriously and our hygienists play a huge role in its detection, monitoring and treatment.

Research has shown that good cleaning techniques significantly reduce the risk of gum disease so please do follow our oral hygiene guidance. A really good hygiene routine will prevent new cavities, fillings needing replacement, gum recession and other dental problems and afflictions.
