The Root of Dental Health
April 17, 2024
As with most things, in dentistry prevention is always better than cure.
The dental hygienist is the expert who will assess your oral health and carry out preventive treatment. With more adult teeth being lost through gum disease rather than tooth decay, regular dental hygiene treatment is essential to keep your gums and teeth healthy. Visits to a hygienist combined with dental check-ups, and maintaining excellent health care at home, will improve the appearance of your teeth and your oral health.
We all know that we should be brushing our teeth in the morning and the evening. Ensuring you brush your teeth before you go to bed is particularly important, your mouth is a great place for bacteria to breed whilst you sleep so make sure you remove food and the daily build-up of plaque before you settle down for the night.
A Hygienist will work alongside your Dentist and will help all patients achieve and maintain excellent oral hygiene. They will work closely with patients and develop a personalised prevention plan to optimise dental and periodontal health. At our practice we aim to ensure every patient has the best possible experience, we provide a relaxing and comfortable environment, with patient comfort a priority.
The main role of the Dental Hygienist is to prevent the causes of dental disease by clinically removing plaque and tartar build up around the teeth and gumline which can be difficult to manage at home. Hygienists can also offer valuable advice on how to maintain a healthy diet
Each patient is different, and we will tailor the dental treatment to our patients’ needs. If you are a new patient, we will evaluate your oral health history and carefully examine the soft tissue of your mouth, your gums, and your teeth. Whilst checking for any decay, or sign of gum disease, your Hygienist will also identify any other issues that will affect your heath and overall wellbeing.
Once you have had your assessment, treatment will begin with primary polishing and scaling. This will remove any plaque and tartar and prevent diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Both diseases cause severe discomfort and in the case of advanced gum disease, can even result in losing teeth.
Regular visits to the Dental Hygienist will help prevent gum disease, and patients will avoid toothaches and inflamed and bleeding gums. Your dental hygienist will also offer tailored advice on how to maintain good dental health and demonstrate techniques you can use at home.
